Halloween Weekend: A Masquerade Dinner & Ball in the Texas Hill Country

For Halloween, we booked a weekend getaway to Fredricksburg.  Texas’s “Wine Country.”

messina_hofWe picked our destination for its evening event, but showed up to the winery with a few hours to spare.  Dapper husband donned morning dress and I (sans mask) went for a tasting in my full costume.

img_4015The Messina Hof winery hosted a Masquerade Dinner & Ball featuring a three course dinner with wine pairings.  Dapper husband put on his tux, and I grabbed my mask before we were officially ready for the night.  With only about sixteen guests, it was an intimate affair.  I was pleasantly surprised when nearly all the attendees turning up in formal wear complete with a mask.  The staff too wore colorful masks and poured generously.  To top it off, the food was quite tasty.

The Menu

First Course

Mixed Greens with Strawberries, Feta, Caramelized Pecans served with Balsamic Vinaigrette
Paired with our Sophia Marie Rosé

The citrus of the rosé complimented the strawberries in the salad wonderfully.

Second Course

Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Apples, Bacon, and Goat Cheese served with Apple Jack Brandy Sauce
Beef Tenderloin Kabobs
Crème Friache Mashers topped with Garlic Chives
Frenched Green Beans with Peppered Bacon

Warm Artisan Bread and Butter

Paired with Messina Hof’s Private Reserve Petit Verdot

I felt the wine actually paired best with the Kabobs, but in a surprising turn of events, the stuffed chicken breast was the most delicious part of this course.

Third Course

Chocolate Almond Torte with Raspberry Mascarpone Cheese
Paired with our Private Reserve Papa Paulo Port

As always, port and dessert are a match made in heaven!

With my excessively fluffy dress and dapper date, I won the costume contest (and a free bottle of wine)! Once dinner came to an end, we had a few hours to visit with other guests and dance the night away.

We decided to rent a cottage at the Messina Hof’s Manor Haus B&B.  It was absolutely adorable.  It was a comfortable space. The bed was ridiculously fluffy and comfortable.  A bottle of sparkling brut was in the fridge.  While the flowers in the front attracted enough butterflies to create a magical fairy land feel, I hope to see more investment in landscaping in the future.  The patios in the back and front of the cottage had no privacy should you have neighbors (a few well placed bushes could solve this problem).  However, it was quiet, peaceful and the night sky exploded with stars.  In the morning, we lounged in the front room peacefully reading while sipping coffee and tea before heading out to explore the rest of Fredricksburg.
